Keys to a Future

Jalopies for Jobs: A program that helps people who need a car for employment.

Cleveland Vocational Industries' Community Employment program is making a difference in Cleveland County. This program is helping people find and maintain employment every day in our community. One of the largest hurdles to overcome for the many people seen in this program is finding transportation. Cleveland Vocational started Jalopies for Jobs as a way to overcome this barrier. This unique program has been assisting individuals with obtaining transportation for over 10 years.

When Beverly entered the program, she wanted to work but had no driver's license, no vehicle and no family support. Although employment was soon located, the job offer expired before transportation could be arranged. Staff decided enough was enough! CVII began to ask the community for donations of vehicles. Meanwhile, we began to help Beverly prepare for her driver's license and encouraged her to save her money for insurance. We did not have to wait long. Soon, someone donated a car; we found Beverly a job, she obtained her license and Jalopies for Jobs was born.

Jason's story started while he was still in school. To graduate with a diploma, he had to have a job in the community. Jason was very motivated to work and had good work skills. Finding him a job was not difficult; getting him to and from work was the problem. Jason's parents were very supportive but both had full time jobs that prevented them from being able to transport him. Although Jason could drive, he could not pass the driver's test. After completing the Driver's Ed classes at CVII, Jason passed the test at the DMV and got his license. Next came a job and Jason was given a car. He graduated with a diploma and is now able to become more independent.

Many of the individuals that enter the Community Employment program want to work but have no vehicle and no family support. Although employment may be soon located, the job offers may expire before transportation can be arranged. It is because of this that Cleveland Vocational Industries began to ask the community for donations of vehicles. Any job candidate that receives a car must agree to remain employed for a year and must develop a budget to pay insurance and maintenance on the vehicle. The program retains title to the vehicles for up to one year as recipients must maintain a good work history.
